The double-headed eagle was used as the symbol for the Byzantine Empire which was later adopted by the Greek Orthodox church. This particular version of the double-headed eagle contains the family cypher of the Palaiologos Dynasty which was the last ruling dynasty before the fall of Constantinople in 1453 AD.
