The Gadsden flag was originally created in 1775 by Christopher Gadsden, a Brigadier General of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. The flag was given to Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Navy, Esek Hopkins, who unfurled it on the USS Alfred. The flag contains a rattlesnake which symbolized the unity of the Thirteen Colonies and the phrase, "Don't Tread On Me" as a warning of the vigilance and willingness to defend against tyranny.
